Marita Marshall

Marshall, Marita (Hocking), (Smith), b. May 12, 1923, d. November 8, 2017. Retired counselor, teacher, administrator and volunteer. She is survived by three children, Catherine Knoetgen, Trudy (Craig) Wallace, Bruce Smith, and step son Jody (Laurie) Marshall and daughter-n-law Sharon Smith. She is preceded in death by her sons Mark Smith (husband of Sharon) Leander Lloyd Smith III, her parents, Anna Mayhew and Harold J. Hocking, son-n-law David Knoetgen, two former husbands, Col. Leander L. Smith Jr. and Judge Paul Marshall and one brother Harold Hocking, SJ and one sister Bernice Griffith. She is survived by one brother William (Bill) Hocking, and one sister Theresa O'Leary both of Maryland, one adopted sister Nona Browne, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She worked at the Girls Welfare Home as a psychological counselor and probation officer for 7 years, and as a counselor and administrator at Socorro Schools until she retired at age 65.  Mrs. Marshall was active for many years in the Presbyterian Church as an elder, deacon, teacher, commissioner, and volunteer. She was also active as a member, volunteer, officer in Presbyterian Women, Church Women United, League of Women Voters, Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, Menaul School, Menaul Historical Library, National Alliance for the mentally ill, NM Conference of Churches, Hillcrest Condominiums, Hogares, Manzano de Sol, and other organizations. After growing up in Washington, DC, Mrs. Marshall lived in many places as an Air Force wife, but has been in New Mexico since 1963 and obtained two of her three degrees here. She was always grateful for her family, friends and colleagues and her full rich life. Services will be held at a later date.
