Tobias N. Castillo

December 7, 1931 — August 7, 2016

Tobias (Toby) Nicholas Castillo passed away suddenly on August 7, 2016 at 84 years of age.  He was born in Albuquerque on December 7, 1931.

He was preceded in death by his parents Amarante Castillo and Josefina Perea Castillo; spouses, Carolina (Ortega) Castillo and Frances (Aragon) Castillo; sisters, Laura (Castillo) Chavez and husband Leo Chavez, Emily (Castillo) Carrillo and husband Raymond Carrillo; brother, Johnny Castillo; brother in law, Bernard (Buddy) Zeve.

He is survived by his sisters, Marie B. Castillo and Lena (Castillo) Zeve; and a special niece, Veronica C. Garcia, with whom he had a significant bond and her husband Michael Wilson whose company he greatly enjoyed.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children.
Toby was a proud US Army Veteran and served our country in Korea and Japan.  He received the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman badge, and Army Occupation Medal (Japan).  He loved our Country and was very patriotic.  Upon returning to the United States he worked for many years at the historic Hilton Hotel (now the Hotel Andaluz) in downtown Albuquerque; thereafter he worked for over 25 years in the press room of the Albuquerque Tribune.

The last seven years of his life he lived at St. Johns Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in ABQ.  There he made many friends with residents, visitors, and staff.  In particular, Ron Baze -his buddy, who preceded him in death and whom he greatly missed. Our gratitude to Sandra Oaxaca whose visits made his day.  The family thanks them for the love and care given to him. Toby will be forever remembered as a kind, loving, sweet, and compassionate man with an easy smile, a great sense of humor and style. He was a man of tremendous faith who loved his God, Country, family and mankind.  He was loved very much and will be sorely missed.
