John F Weigele

May 6, 1916 — January 30, 2016

Weigele, John F
Age 99, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2016. He was born in Guttenberg, New Jersey on May 6, 1916 to Richard Weigele and Marie Hensler Weigele. He was the eldest of five children. His four siblings were: Richard, Jr., Helen, Harold, and Mary.
John was raised in the farm country of Ulster County, New York, where he learned to appreciate nature. For the rest of his life he enjoyed gardening, bird-watching, and believed in protecting the natural world.
As a young man, he worked as a police officer for the railroad. His sister Mary recalls ironing his shirts, which had to be just right because John was a perfectionist who understood the importance of the image associated with his position.
John was born with a wanderlust, which may have been one reason why he joined the Army at age 24, serving at Ft. Shafter in Hawaii. John was an avid photographer, and when he was off-duty he would develop pictures for his fellow servicemen in a self-made darkroom.
In 1938 he married Iris Flood, the daughter of the local drug store owner.  Iris shared John's love of travel and they were fortunate to visit many destinations, both national and international, throughout their lives together.
John and Iris had one daughter Toni Weigele Frei, who had a son, Brian Werling. Toni raised Brian as a single mother, but John was a constant presence in Brian’s life, often times serving as the father Brian never had.
In their travels, John and Iris fell in love with the American Southwest. They particularly enjoyed New Mexico because of its landscape, wide-open spaces, and mild winters. They moved to Albuquerque in the early 1970’s, where they remained for the rest of their lives.
John is survived by his sister Mary Burr, his great-grandson Hiatt Werling, and his granddaughter-in-law Heidi Werling. He will be missed by his friends and neighbors Joey Wells and Cindy Mauldin.
It was John's wish that no funeral or memorial service be held in his honor. Donations in his name may be made to the National Audubon Society. To view information or leave a condolence, please visit www.danielsfuneral.com
