It is with much sorrow that we announce the death of Albert Thomas Gonzales. Albert passed away peacefully at home on November 19, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on November 25, 1945, in Cedarvale, NM to Charlotte and Tranquilino Gonzales.
Albert, also known as “Speedy Gonzales,” was a graduate of Rio Grande HS and a proud Raven. Albert was an All-American football player in high school and was then recruited to New Mexico State University where he continued his football career. He was awarded All American Guard at New Mexico State University. Coach Woodson recognized him as ‘By far the best offensive-defensive line man I have coached in my ten years at New Mexico State.” In 1968 Albert was drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders (Canadian Football league). In addition, Albert played for the Texarkana Titans of the Continental Football League.
Albert returned to New Mexico State where he continued his love of football as an Assistant Defensive Coach and completed his master’s degree. Albert then entered an administrative role at New Mexico State ultimately serving as the Athletic Director. Albert retired from New Mexico state university in 1997 and relocated to Placitas, NM. Albert was a great carpenter, building his own workshop and served as the neighborhood “handyman”. He enjoyed being outdoors and traveling in his RV with his wife Roberta throughout his retirement.
Albert was survived by his wife, Roberta L. Casados of Placitas, NM and was especially loved by her family. Also survived by brother, Dave Torrez. Son, Christopher Gonzales and family, Daughter Reina Flores, daughter Caroline Olivas and husband, Ron Olivas, granddaughter, Jasmyn Olivas, grandson, Jonah Olivas. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Pete Peralta, as well as his nieces, Lisa Peralta Bell, Renee Peralta-Garcia, and nephew, Jeff Peralta, plus several great-nieces/nephews and cousins. Also touching his life were many close friends.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Tranquilino and Charlotte Gonzales, sister Griselda Peralta, daughter, Stephanie Reyes and father-in-law, Robert J. Gerhardt.
