Bertha Gumbs

Gumbs, Bertha T. Age 87, a resident of Rio Rancho passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014. She was born in Boston, Massachuttes on October 16, 1926, to Miguel and Edmonia (Hare) Monteiro. Over the years, she lived in New York, Puerto Rico, California, and New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wentworth E. Gumbs. Bertha is survived by her children, Wentworth "Miki" Gumbs of Tacoma, WA, Lenny Gumbs and wife Brenda of Cincinnati, OH, Carmen Gumbs of Albuquerque, NM, Romalia Skeete and husband Emile of Spanaway, WA, Candida Gumbs of Redlands, CA; eight grandchildren, Mariah, Amani, Tara, Andre, Anissa, Angela, Carleton "Codi", Jonathan; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Bertha was a housewife, worked in Central Supply for North Shore and Kings County Hospital in New York, a Record Company, and a Crossing Guard in Westbury, LI. She was very involved with the PTA in the Public Schools, and became the Secretary of the NAACP in Westbury. Later, as a member and volunteer at the Meadowlark Senior Center she was appointed to the Sandoval County Commission on Senior Affairs to represent the Center. She was also a woman of many hobbies to include ceramics, crafts, drawing, writing poems, sewing, reading, word search puzzles, and gardening. She loved flowers and the color blue.
