Bill passed away peacefully in his Albuquerque home on March 17, 2018. He was born in Pratt, Kansas June 15, 1925, where he met and married the love his life of 63 years, Helen M Renner. They moved to New Mexico in 1959 making their home in Alamogordo for almost 50 years. Bill left Alamogordo in 2009 to be closer to children.
Bill served in the United States Navy during WW II. He retired as a letter carrier from the US Postal Service in 1985 and served as Past President of NALC, Alamogordo Chapter. They were members of the Good Sam Club and spent a lot of their retired time traveling, which they so enjoyed!
They had a get-a-way property in Cloud Country near Cloudcroft for many years. Bill also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, arts & crafts, coin collecting, reading, country western music and playing dominoes; but, most of all he dearly loved his family and the time spent with them!
He is survived by son Richard (Sandy) of Surprise, AZ; daughter Sheryl (Todd Van Berg), of Albuquerque; sister Monica Rauhut of Pratt KS; brother Virgil Lee Garrett (Sandye) of Melbourne, FL; granddaughter Melissa Johnson (Mike Sutton) of Cedar Crest, NM; grandson Brian Johnson, Albuquerque; great grandchildren Makayla Johnson, Briana Johnson, Jordan Johnson; one great-great-granddaughter Krystalynn Garcia and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Helen, grandson Todd Van Berg II, and two sisters Donna Witherington and Jean DeWitt.
In honoring Bill’s request, there will be no services. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Daniel’s Funeral Home on Wyoming Blvd. Please feel free to make donations to your favorite charity in his memory.
