HARVEY-Boss Esau Harvey, born June 27, 1932 in Brandon, Mississippi. Passed away at the age of 78 on October 8, 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico following a lengthy illness. Boss was the eldest son of the late Arrette and Joseph Harvey. He is survived by two sisters and a brother, his wife, children, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many who knew, loved and respected him. Surviving widow is Ella Jean Harvey, daughter of Sally and John Thompson. Siblings include: Grace Morrow, James Joseph (Jim) Harvey, Samuel Harvey and Berdie Harvey. His children include: Kenneth (Rick), Stanley, Karen, Constance (Connie), Angela and Charles Harvey. He invested himself in the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and others. In many ways, Boss was a visionary and complex man. He was a US Army and Air Force veteran decorated during the Korean Conflict. Highest rank achieved was Staff Sergeant. Boss or “Judge” as he was known by many of his childhood friends overcame many challenges of Jim Crow-era Mississippi to become a Ford Foundation Fellow, Neighbor of the Year award recipient, gourmet cook, nutritionist, seminary graduate and religious researcher. He was instrumental in enhancing feeding and meal prep for the Child Development Group -Head Start program in Mississippi in the late 1960’s and early 70’s. He had an insatiable curiousity and skepticism about the orthodoxy of things and loved to challenge all he knew in debating current political, religious and historice issues. He delighted radio talk show hosts during the pioneer-days of talk radio. He was not a perfect man and rarely praised but touched many lives. He loved to help others and was generous to many in sharing food and his table. He made a difference and will be remembered. Additional information about him is available on Facebook.
