Catherine Autry, age 90, died on the 2nd of January, 2016. Catherine, known for her incisive wit, intellectual curiosity, and disciplined compassion, was a long-time resident of the Albuquerque metropolitan area, including Corrales and Rio Rancho.
Born 14 September 1925 to George Newton and Maude Anderson Autry of Mena, Arkansas, Catherine, through courage, indomitable spirit, and intelligence crafted for herself a successful and fulfilling life spanning five states and intellectually ranging from the small, 1930s schoolhouse in Prescott, Arkansas to a college degree. Nicknamed Mean Old Mom (MOM) because she believed in consequences mixed judiciously with compassion, she earned not only the love, but also the admiration and respect of her offspring.
She is survived by her children Karen Bickel Sunde of Rio Rancho, NM; Paul E. Bickel II of Santee, CA; and Michael C. Bickel of Atascadero, CA. She also leaves six grandchildren including Cathe G. Sunde Sanchez of Albuquerque, NM and Robert J. Sunde III of Ward, AR; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews, of whom several still reside in Mena, AR. Also touching her life in her last years was Mary Velarde of Albuquerque, NM, a dear and loyal friend. Catherine’s family will hold a memorial service to honor her memory 29 Dec. 2016 at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Vista Verde Cemetery, Rio Rancho.
