On March 14, 2024, Charlie F. Hern, passed away surrounded by his family at the age of 85 years old. He was born in a little town in northern New Mexico called Buena Vista, to parents Augustine “Gus” Hern and Bertha Torres Hern on August 8, 1938. Charlie is survived by his wife Susan Hern who he was married to and with for over 60 yrs.; son Phillip L. Hern, wife Deborah; daughter Chal-Marie Lucero, husband Darryl; grandsons, Phillip P. Hern, wife Jocelyn; Isiah Muniz; granddaughter Jocelyn Marie Lucero; great grandchildren: Elayna Muniz, Emma Muniz and Isiah Muniz, Jr. He is also survived by two sisters, Viola Archibeque and Marion Johnson; one brother; many nieces and nephews. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Augustine and Bertha Hern; brothers: Dan Hern, Abe Hern and James Hern.
Charlie attended many schools throughout his life. He was mainly proud of being a Valley High Viking. He played basketball for Valley High and was recognized in the newspaper for being an outstanding player and high scorer for most if not all of the games he played. He was an All City player in Albuquerque and played for state championships representing the North in the years 1956-1957. Charlie received a scholarship to attend St. Michaels College in Santa Fe, NM. He attended for about a year and realized that college was not for him, so he joined the Air National Guard and retired from the Army National Guard in 1990 after 30 years of service. Charlie also played basketball for the Senior Olympics representing New Mexico in 1993.
Charlie married the love of his life and remained together till his death. Charlie was a member of: the Knights of Columbus, The American Legion, The Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge. He was employed by General Electric and retired from there after 30 yrs. He was a member of the Machinists Union. After retiring from GE, he spent a lot of time with his family, especially his grandchildren who he was so proud of. He enjoyed going on trips with Susan and their friends to Laughlin, NV and Las Vegas, NV, especially for March Madness. This was a yearly trip for them. Charlie also loved spending time up in Northern NM, in Wagon Mound, where he loved to go frequently, especially for Labor Day weekend to celebrate Bean Day. Charlie loved fishing, hunting, golfing, and hanging out with his close friends “his buddies”. Charlie was loved by all for his friendly personality and just an all around great man. He will be missed by many, especially his family who he saw on a daily basis and his buddies.
A Rosary will be recited Friday, April 12, 2024 at 9:30 AM followed by a Mass at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima, 4020 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM. Interment will take place Monday, April 15, 2024 at 1:30 PM, Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 N. Guadalupe St., Santa Fe, NM 87501. Pallbearers will be: Phillip P. Hern and Isiah J. Muniz. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jocelyn Marie Lucero, Elayna Muniz, Emma Muniz, Isiah Muniz, Jr.
