Chester Dumas Huffmire, Jr.
Died 10/31/11 at the age of 84 years in his home in Rio Rancho, NM. Chester was born to Chester Sr. and Maude Huffmire on November 30, 1926 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. On May 8, 1952, he married Shirley Blair. Adventurous and loyal, Chester served in Japan as infantry when he first entered military service, then was a longtime member of the Mountain and Cold Weather troops out of Camp Hale and Ft. Carson, both located near Colorado Springs, Colorado. In his military career, Chester served in Alaska, Germany, France, Greece, and Korea. He retired from the US Army as a Master Sergeant E-8 in August, 1967. In Fort Collins, Colorado, after retiring from the service, Chester became a carpenter assisting in the construction of custom-built homes. He retired as a builder in 1986 and moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Beyond his years of loyalty to the United States military, Chester was a mountain climber, an avid snow skier, and a great square dancer. All of his friends and family appreciated and loved his humor and energy. He and Shirley square-danced from 1974 to 2006. Chester was also president of the Albuquerque Square Dance Association for a time. All who knew Chester will remember him as an imposing and inspiring figure, in heart, body, and mind. His philosophy was to work hard, do your best, play well, laugh, dance, and love life; be kind and generous. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, and his four daughters, Andre Huffmire, Susan Johnson, Connie Huffmire, and Maude Huffmire, and his seven grandchildren. Chester is also survived by his two sisters, Beatrice Dustin of Rio Rancho and Florence Hansen of Omaha, Nebraska, and many nieces and nephews.
