Cooney Benavidez, 86, of Socorro, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Polvadera, New Mexico to (Florencio Benavidez and Della Sarracino-Benavidez), Cooney graduated from Socorro High School. As a young man, he worked as a gas station attendant to earn money for his first car. He proudly served his country as a United States Army veteran in New Orleans, Louisiana.
A hardworking and enterprising man, Cooney built a diverse and successful career over the decades. He worked as an electrician at Crabtree Hardware, tended bar at the Capital Bar, grew and sold produce, raised sheep and cattle, served as Vice President of First State Bank, bought and sold cars, and—most notably-owned and operated his longtime business, Cooney's Package Liquor.
Above all, Cooney was a devoted family man and a respected pillar of his community. He took great pride in being there for others, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren on the family farm and ranch, creating lasting memories through hard work and simple joys.
He is preceded in death by his parents Florencio Benavidez and Della Sarracino-Benavidez, and brothers Joaquin and Joe.
He is survived by his former spouse (divorced), Bernice; his wife, Lupe; his children Helynn (Matt), and Carlos; his stepsons Ronnie (Carol), Anthony (Jackie) and Emmanuel (Alejandra); his stepdaughters Darlene (Steve), Perla (Daryl), Faviola and Yesica. He was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren who brought him immense happiness and joy.
