Domenick Carani

October 25, 1966 — January 15, 2019

Domenick “DC” Carani, 52, passed away on January 15, 2019, in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Born in Miami, Florida, on October 25, 1966, he was the beloved son of Joseph Thomas Carani Sr. and Barbara Carani.

Domenick proudly served over 20 years in the United States Air Force as a helicopter mechanic, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant (MSgt). He was a dedicated and meticulous crew chief, never allowing a helicopter to take off unless he was confident enough to fly on it himself—a philosophy that sometimes delayed departures, but always earned the respect of his fellow airmen. A true “Rotorhead,” Domenick found his home among the Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) community, where the tight-knit, family-like bond became a source of great pride and fulfillment.

Even as a young man, Domenick’s sense of leadership and responsibility stood out. He served as Vice President of his local chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), reflecting his early commitment to community and purpose. That drive to lead—paired with an unwavering sense of integrity—carried through his entire life.

Domenick had a deep-rooted tendency to speak his mind and stand his ground, even when doing so came at personal cost. He believed in doing what was right, especially when others stood to benefit. His courage and convictions earned the admiration of many, even in moments of disagreement.

Outside of his military service, Domenick had a lifelong passion for photography. Rarely seen without a camera around his neck, he captured countless candid moments—friends laughing, helicopters in motion, and the breathtaking landscapes that caught his eye. He had a gift for seeing beauty in everyday life and preserving it for others.

While stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, Domenick became a certified scuba diver. Though his time was often stretched thin between duty and family, he always carved out space to dive, calling it the most tranquil, serene, and exhilarating experience of his life.

After retirement, Domenick remained dedicated to service. As the first Active-Duty commander of American Legion Post 118 in Rio Rancho, he left a lasting impact through years of hands-on involvement—cooking meals, cleaning glasses behind the bar, and pitching in wherever help was needed. His leadership wasn’t about titles; it was about action, service, and presence.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph T. Carani Sr.

Domenick is survived by his mother, Barbara Carani of Lincolnton, GA; his brother, Joseph T. (Cheryl) Carani Jr. of Indian Lake Estates, FL; daughter, Kirsten Carani of Rio Rancho, NM, and her fiancé, Steven Smith of Tucson, AZ; son, Domenick A. Carani II of Rio Rancho, NM; and his cherished grandchildren: Emily Cole, Olivia Smith, and Silas Smith. He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces, Nina Wallace of Mashpee, MA; Heather Carani of Raeford, NC; Elizabeth Carani of Lakeland, FL; and his nephew, Joseph T. Carani III of Auburndale, FL.

Domenick left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His dedication, candor, warmth, and strength of character will be deeply missed—but never forgotten—by his family, friends, fellow airmen, and the many lives he touched.
