Donald J. Sutherland passed away December 18, 2022, after a short illness.
Don was born in Manhattan, New York in 1929. He served as a New York City Police sergeant for 20 years and retired as a sergeant-instructor at the NYPD Police Academy in 1974. He also served in the US Naval Reserve as a Radarman. After retirement, he moved his family to the Land of Enchantment. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology at the University of Albuquerque. He also worked at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy as a training instructor. Don volunteered to ACLOA, Palo Duro Senior Center and Women’s Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Catherine Sutherland; two brothers, Robert and Edward; and daughter, Barbara. He is survived by his two children, Susan and Andrew and their spouses; sister, Nancy DeRenzi; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and close friends.
Services will be held 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 5, 2023, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 1502 Sara Rd, Rio Rancho, NM 87124.
