Dorothy Nickerson Madrid

February 5, 1920 — March 15, 2010

Dorothy Nickerson Madrid, 90, of Farmington, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 15, 2010, in Farmington. She was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Durango, Colo., to Joseph Fredrick Nickerson and Lillie Romero Nickerson. Dorothy and Adeliado Madrid were married June 27, 1936, in Pagosa Junction, Colo. Dorothy taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was such a beloved Sunday school teacher that some of her students would not go to the next grade level when promoted. She had a women's jail ministry for five years and blessed many women with her love, compassion and devotion in their lives. Dorothy was a stay-at-home mother until her youngest was school age. Dorothy at times was father and mother to her children as Adeliado worked away from the family home. Even though this was difficult, she was a woman with determination and will and would do whatever it took to make her family successful. When she started working outside the home she announced that from now on there would no longer be homemade bread and that, much to the dismay of her children, from now on it would be store bought! She was self-employed for more than 35 years. Dorothy worked more than one job at times so her children could not only have the things they needed, but the things they wanted as well. She was a mother, prayer warrior, a best friend, a mentor and a confidant to her children. She was the absolute happiest when surrounded by her family. She truly was our foundation and our rock. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lillie Nickerson; her beloved husband and soul-mate, Adeliado; oldest daughter, Sulema Raley; infant son, Silviano Esteban Madrid; grandson, Pervis Raley Jr.; sons-in-law, John R. Lowe and Otis "Slim" Thompson; her wonderful caretaker, Rita Duran; siblings, Frank Nickerson, DelFinia Armenta, Lloyd Nickerson, Dan Nickerson, Bertha Duran Torrez, Ben Nickerson, Florence Saiz Garcia, Rose Williams and Verne Nickerson. She is survived by sons, Donald Madrid and his wife, Marcella, Richard Madrid and his wife, LaVerne, Jimmy Madrid and his wife, Jane, Tommy Hinton and his wife, Debbie; daughters, Dorothy Lowe, Alice Madrid, Viola Moyer and Fredrica Krieg; Hilary Madrid; grandchildren, Robert Gallegos, Betty Gonzales, Jean Armstrong, Theresa Mestas, Adeliado Madrid, Sandra Crespin, Matthew Madrid, Brenda Jones, Rebecca Coulombe, Joseph Madrid, Vanessa Baca, Serena Thompson and Whitney Krieg; her beautiful caretaker, Doreen Barela; 27 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
