Dr. Everett Vincent McCaughey

May 22, 1928 — September 23, 2009

MCCAUGHEY - Dr. Everett Vincent McCaughey, 81, passed away on September 23, 2009, after a life of service. He was born May 22, 1928, in Wakefield, RI. Everett was a graduate of Providence College in 1948 and Tufts Medical School in 1952. He married Shirley Louise Kenerleber, June 1952, in Wakefield, RI. Everett interned at Boston City Hospital in 1953. He entered the US Army in 1953 during the Korean War and served as a physician in the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, NC, and with the 3rd Division in Ft. Benning, Georgia until 1955. After his discharge, he chose the Tulane service at Charity hospital in New Orleans for his ob-gyn residency. As a board certified obstetrician gynecologist, he practiced in Albuquerque from 1958 to 1986, at both St. Joseph and Presbyterian Hospitals. Among his many interests were the raising and the showing of quarter horses, and flying. He held private, instrument, and multi-engine licenses, and piloted his Cessna 172, Cessna 182, or Mooney, across the US many times with his family. After purchasing lakeside property at Conchas Lake and with his home electrician license in hand, Ev and family constructed a two bedroom redwood house on weekends. Waterskiing and sailing had to be squeezed in that year-1971-1972. He studied electronics, and used this knowledge to build and repair TV sets. Everett was an "expert" ham radio operator - call sign KB5E. He also studied and spoke excellent Spanish. Ev was an avid sailor and with the purchase of a San Diego-based, Westsail 32, he prepared for his dream of cruising. After retiring in 1986, Ev with his wife spent the first year cruising the Sea of Cortez. The following year, Ev and Shirley returned to San Diego and purchased a Westsail 42, named "Sea Biscuit." They then started their 6 year cruising adventure south from San Diego. The adventure began; many countries and islands were visited, among them were: Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, San Blas Islands, Florida, Bahamas, a section of the Intracoastal Waterway, the East coast to Rhode Island, and Delaware River to Chesapeake Bay. From North Carolina, their voyage took them through the Devil's Triangle to the Virgin Islands. They sailed through the Caribbean, the upper and lower Antilles, Venezuela, and the ABC islands before returning again through Panama to San Diego. They moved to Rockport, Texas, in 1996, where they lived for 6 years and enjoyed birding the Gulf coast before returning again to Albuquerque. Everett lived his life in service to others. He volunteered in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala, as a medical doctor for several months. He volunteered and taught English as a second language to many in the Albuquerque area. He also volunteered with AARP to help prepare tax returns at numerous senior centers. His most recent hobby was photography, particularly wildlife. Two of his bird photographs were published in the "Rockport Pilot," and one black bear photo received recognition at the NM State Fair. Everett is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters Elizabeth Ann Zarem, Los Angeles, Kathleen Gail McCaughey, Albuquerque, and Anne Janan, Albuquerque; daughter-in-law Carmen Rael McCaughey, Albuquerque; and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Presbyterian Hospice, 8300 Constitution N.E., Albuquerque, 87110. Everett's care has been entrusted to: Daniels Family Funeral Services 7601 Wyoming Blvd, NE Albuquerque, NM 87109 (505) 821-0010
