Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" (McCormick) Ross

Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” (McCormick) Ross passed away in Bullhead City, Arizona on March 25, 2023.  Betsy’s husband and sister were at her side.  Betsy, born October 7, 1946, in Indianapolis, Indiana, was the eldest child of Doctor Charles Owen McCormick Jr. and Ester Verena (Brubach) McCormick.  She graduated from Scecina Memorial High School, Indianapolis, and received a Spanish language degree from Mount St. Joseph University, Cincinnati, Ohio.  Betsy also studied at University of Salamanca in Spain and Instiuto Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico.  Shortly after graduation Betsy joined the Peace Corps.  After initial training, she served a 19-month tour in Morocco, North Africa, teaching animal husbandry in a rural village.  She mastered the Arabic language. Betsy spent most of her working career as a travel consultant; including a one-person office that provided travel arrangements for the New Mexico Army National Guard.   As a civilian, Betsy was awarded the New Mexico National Guard Medal of Merit to recognize her proficiency.  As the travel industry generally waned, Betsy’s last occupation, prior to retirement, was as secretary to the adjutant general of the New Mexico National Guard, Santa Fe.  Betsy’s infectious smile and contagious humor were loved by all who knew her.  But her great love was personal travel.  She traveled the world extensively at every opportunity.  After decades in New Mexico, Betsy and her husband settled in Bullhead City, Arizona in 2017.

“Bets” was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Michael McCormick and Patrick Jay McCormick; and nephew, Charles Owen “Corky” McCormick IV.

Betsy is survived by her devoted husband of 20 years, Walter Alan “Wally” (Ruzyla) Ross; and loving siblings, Kathleen “Ky” Zatopa and Doctor Charles Owen McCormick III.  Also surviving are stepdaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Norman of Lawrence, Kansas; and step-grandchildren, Elle Norman and Jay Norman.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2023, 11:00AM, Daniels Family Funeral Services - Southern Chapel, 2400 Southern Blvd. SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124.  Following visitation, Betsy will be interred in Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:00PM.
