Emil F. Bender of Rio Rancho, NM, died peacefully in his home Saturday, March 13th. During his transition from this world to the next, he was surrounded and supported by loving family, friends, residential staff, and many caregivers. Truly touching all those whom he met, Emil will always be remembered for his kind smile and ability to positively interact with a wide variety of people. Born March 21, 1920 in New York City, Mr. Bender was 89; with but 8 days before he turned 90 years of age. For almost sixty years, he was married to his beloved wife, Millie, who preceded him in death in 2003. While living in several towns and states throughout their years together, they raised a caring family as well as sharing a joint passion for world travel which took them around the world several times. While in Sedona, AZ, Emil was an active member of the Church of the Red Rocks and the Christ Lutheran Church. He was a dedicated volunteer in the community working with numerous charities including; Sedona Library restoration, the funding/building of a state-of-the-art humane shelter, and joined in the projects of either churches or service organizations. Mr. Bender is survived by his daughter Judy and husband Michael Long of Las Vegas, NM; his sons, John and Leslie Bates of McLean, VA, and James and Karen Bender of Canoncito, NM; five grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
