In Loving Memory of Erik Gunnar Johanson “Erik the Great” – Our Gentle Giant November 24, 1986 – July 9, 2025
Erik Gunnar Johanson, affectionately known by many as “Erik the Great” or “Our Gentle Giant,” passed peacefully at home in Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 9, 2025, at the age of 38.
Born on November 24, 1986, Erik was a man full of heart, humor, and a deep love for life’s simple wonders. He graduated from high school and began his early career working in the family business, Edgewood Equipment Rentals, alongside his father. Later, he found pride and purpose in his work as a sheet metal worker for Miller Bonded Inc., where he dedicated himself to his craft with strength and integrity.
Erik’s greatest passion, however, was the great outdoors. From a young age, he was drawn to the wild—exploring water holes, catching frogs, fish, and lizards, and embracing every adventure nature had to offer. Summers spent at the lake with family and friends became treasured traditions, where Erik’s joy was contagious and his laughter could echo across the water.
He carried that adventurous spirit into fatherhood, sharing his love of nature with his beloved sons, Camden and Dylan. Whether it was teaching them to appreciate the quiet moments of fishing (even when not catching), chasing frogs at night, or cruising the block on tote goats, Erik made everyday moments magical. He believed in growing young minds with curiosity, wonder, and a healthy dose of dad jokes.
Erik had a gift for humor, a lighthearted soul who could make anyone laugh with a quick one-liner or a classic pun. He made people feel at ease, welcomed, and loved—a man whose presence could lift a room and whose absence will be deeply felt.
Erik is survived by his devoted wife, Brittany Johanson, and their two sons, Camden and Dylan Johanson. He also leaves behind his loving parents, Karen and Ronald Johanson, his sister Mari Johanson, his nephew Aiden Cruz, Grandma Ann Bardouche and numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. His memory lives on in the hearts of countless family members, friends, and all those fortunate enough to share in his many adventures.
Erik’s life was a beautiful story of love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. His legacy will live on in the wild places he loved, the family he adored, and the many lives he touched along the way.
A celebration of Erik’s life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with a reception to follow.
