Eva J. Martinez

May 9, 1948 — March 20, 2022

Eva J. Martinez died peacefully at home surrounded by her family in Rio Rancho, New Mexico on March 20th, 2022, at the age of 73 years.

Eva is survived by her loving husband, Elbert Martinez of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; daughter Lynette Martinez of Rio Rancho, NM; son Vincent Martinez of Rio Rancho, NM; daughter, Janelle and son-in-law, Bodie Morgan of Rio Rancho, NM; brother, John Rodriguez of Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren, Cameron Griffin, Shelby Griffin, Luke Morgan, Victoria Morgan, Noah Morgan, and Violet Morgan; and many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends. Eva is preceded in death by her mother, Helen (Espinoza) Rodriguez; father, Leo Rodriguez; and her brother, David Rodriguez.

Eva was born on Sunday, May 9th, 1948, in Española, New Mexico, to parents Helen (Espinoza) and Leo Rodriguez. She attended Española High School and graduated in 1966. Eva married Elbert D. Martinez on Saturday, May 15th, 1965, in Española, New Mexico. They were married for over 56 years and had three children.

Eva worked many jobs during her lifetime to support her family. Her last place of employment was at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in southern California, where she worked for 10 years in Utilization Management and Volunteer Services.  Special interests of hers included sewing, traveling, visiting casinos (she loved Las Vegas, Nevada), watching horse racing, and watching and rooting for various sports teams including the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and many football teams, alongside Elbert. She enjoyed decorating her home, especially for the holidays. Eva loved tea cups and had a large, beautiful collection. She had dreamed of one day opening up her own tearoom. Eva was an active member of the Church of the Incarnation (Catholic) in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Eva supported the Special Olympics in both California and New Mexico because of her son, Vincent, who held a very special place in her heart.

Eva and Elbert spent 42 years living in southern California where they raised their three children before moving back to New Mexico in 2007. They built a beautiful home together, where many wonderful memories were made. Eva and Elbert enjoyed traveling to many places including Jamaica and Hawaii, as well as taking cruises to Canada, Alaska, Mexico, and throughout the east coast (Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and more).

Eva was known as “Mimi” to her 6 grandchildren, whom she loved and adored very much (the feeling was mutual). She was a generous, thoughtful, and loving person who put everyone else’s needs before her own. Eva cared for others and was a “motherly” figure to many people (not just her own children and grandchildren). She was a very outgoing, personable, friendly lady who was easy to talk to and was loved by all. She will be terribly missed and will remain in our hearts forever.

The Martinez family would like to thank all their many family members and friends throughout the country who have reached out by phone, text, or in-person to offer their condolences and support.
