OBITUARY Floretta Winfield was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 10, 1939 to the late Goulton J. Sr. and Marion Brooks Darby. She was the elder of four siblings and was affectionately known as Flo. The Darbys moved to Oakland, California in 1943. Flo received the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized on the profession of her faith at an early age. She enjoyed singing in the choir and serving on the junior Usher Board. She later became a faithful member of the Evergreen Baptist Church of Oakland, California under the leadership of the late Rev. J. L. Richards. Flo attended schools in the Oakland Public school system and graduated from McClymond High School in the class of 1957. Flo met and married her soul mate, Clinton M. Winfield Sr. in November 24, 1957. This union was blessed with five sons, Clinton M. Jr., Goulton J., Calvin U., Angelo G., and Michael E. Winfield. She adopted two of her granddaughters, Marion F. and Wendy M. Winfield. Flos life revolved around her family. During the 21 years of her husbands career in the military, they were blessed to have traveled extensively including tours in Alaska, Oregon, Florida, Italy, and a number of cities in California. The family ultimately settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976. She raised all of her children in church, and did not believe in sparing the rod. She highly valued education as a whole. Flo also encouraged and supported her sons participation in boy scouts, Evergreen B.C drill teams, and various sports. Flo was a gregarious person, and seldom met a stranger. She loved people. She enjoyed a long career in bowling, traveling through-out the states (which afforded her and the grandchildren site-seeing pleasures). Flo enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and loved to play bingo. She will also be remembered as an awesome cook. She was employed for brief periods, selling Avon, working at the Base Exchange and Wal-Mart. Flo was the matriarch of the Darby family in California, and will be dearly and truly missed; we believe, however, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Although not a member, she attended Grant Chapter A.M.E. regularly and volunteered her services when possible, until her health failed. Flo was preceded in death by her parents, Goulton J. Darby Sr. and Marion Brooks Darby, her brother Goulton J. Darby Jr., son Calvin U. Winfield, and grandson Clinton M. Winfield, III. She leaves to cherish her precious memories; her husband of over 56 years Clinton M Winfield, Sr., her children; sons, Clinton, Goulton, Angelo (Patricia) and Michael Winfield; daughters; Marion and Wendy Winfield; 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Carol A. Coston and Marion D. Womack. One sister-in-law, Berthella Winfield; brother-in-law Herbert Winfield; and a host of other relatives and friends.
