Floyd H. Braaten, Jr.

Floyd was born in Harvey, IL to Floyd H Braaten Sr and Sophie Simons Braaten as
the oldest of 5 children. Floyd graduated in 1960 from North High School in Phoenix and
attended Arizona State College, graduating from the The University of New Mexico
in 1969. Floyd received his Masters from The University of New Mexico in
Chemical Engineering in 1975.
Floyd worked at Sandia National Laboratories from 1969 until 1999, leading the
Explosive Components department as a Manager from 1994-1999. Throughout
Floyd's 30 years of service he contributed to inventions and important national
security programs for both nuclear testing and new transportation safeguard
methods. He was a member of the DCT3 test series team at the Nevada Test Site,
participated in the Safeguards Transporter Prototype program and contributed to
inventions including carbon/carbon composts and methods for induction
deburring. His work will have a lasting legacy on the mission of Sandia National
Laboratories.
Floyd was a member of Sombra Del Monte Christian Church where he served as an
elder and board chairman, while also singing in the choir.
Floyd is survived by his wife Pat, siblings Tom Braaten (Susan), Barbara Brown and
Carrie Jo Wright (Rick).
Floyd is survived by five children Erin Vargas (Adolfo), Mike Braaten (Deborah),
Floyd Braaten III (Sarah), Joey Jablonski (Jenni) and Michael Jablonski (Radhika)
and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
