Francis “Mark” McCarty, 93, of Aztec passed away Sunday, April, 10, 2011, in Farmington. He was born September 5, 1917, in Durango Colorado. Mark was raised on a farm outside of Aztec. He graduated from Aztec High School in 1934. Mark was a WWII veteran. He saw action in Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart and honorably discharged after being wounded in the battle for Anzio. Using the GI Bill, he attended ENMU and graduated with a degree in education. In 1956, he was hired as principal of Park Avenue Elementary in Aztec. He served as principal of Park Avenue Elementary until his retirement in 1980. Mark was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Berniece. He is survived by his son, Jerry (Rhodna) McCarty; two daughters, Patty (Dave) Trudeau and Mary Alice (Wayne) Townsend; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Pastor Jeff Symonds will be officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens, 6917 E. Main, in Farmington. Pallbearers are Ernest Jackson, Bill Francis, Lynn Woods, Marty Steffan, Robert McCarty, and Jim Dusenbery. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
