Three days after the Gulf War broke out in early August of 1990, Fred was part of the first and original ground troops (The Ready Brigade) deployed to Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield and in Fred’s own words, “we were known as the speed bumps sent into the war zone to stop any further advance of Saddam Hussein’s incursion into Kuwait.” Fred was part of the victorious ground war and treated many injured soldiers, including enemy soldiers and was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, and many other combat awards. Upon returning to Ft Bragg, NC, home of the 82nd Airborne, Fred was awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal for his efforts in supporting the victims of Hurricane Andrew. Upon discharge from the service, Fred spent many years working with his dad at West Mesa Pest Control.

Fred leaves behind to greatly mourn him, his mother, Sylvianne Horned Eagle Sherman; his father Joel Sherman; his sister, Lavonne Sherman; his precious niece Alexis Sherman; his step mother, Dorthy Lopez-Sherman, and his step dad, Thomas Nolcotti. Fred was predeceased by his brother, Robert Horned Eagle who preceded Fred into the spirit world where he has already welcomed Fred home. Fred will also be missed by his service dog, Deuce, who will miss his master immensely. Fred will also be so missed by his large family in South Dakota, family in Florida, New Jersey, New Mexico, and his friends near and far from the Army and his many childhood friends.
