George Applebay, 89, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away Monday, April 6, 2015.
George was preceded in death by his wife Earlene in 1983 and son Brent in 1975.
George is survived by his son, Darin, who also lives in Albuquerque; daughters Judy and Georgann from Southern CA. He is also survived by two grandsons, Travis in Colorado and Tidus in Southern CA; as well as three great- grandchildren, all living in Southern CA.
George's love of aviation kept him working until late last year at his business, Applebay Aircraft, located at the Moriarty Airport. His accomplishments included designing and building a number of competition sailplanes, receiving
numerous outstanding achievement awards for his contributions to aviation, and having one of his sailplanes, the ZUNI, dedicated into the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. In addition, he founded the U.S. Southwest Soaring Museum, also located in Moriarty.
His joy in life was helping others enjoy their life. He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren along with other relatives and many friends.
Service will be held at the U.S. Southwest Soaring Museum at 918 Historic U.S. 66, Moriarty, NM at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 11th.
