George C. Dean (GC) passed away on April 29, 2025 along with his constant companion, his dog Max.
GC, as he was known to his family and many friends, was born to Robert (Bud) and Annie M Dean on October 19, 1934, in Texas. Bud and Annie moved to Socorro in 1935 when GC was a year old. They remained in Socorro, making New Mexico their permanent home. After graduating from Socorro High School in 1953 he went to work for Mountain Bell Telephone Company in Albuquerque where he met Evelyn Murray. The two were married after a 2 week courtship and relocated back home to Socorro in 1956, building the family home in 1966. GC & Evelyn remained side by side for 67 years until her passing in 2022.
After working for Mountain Bell he went to work for White Sands Missile Range and in 1974, along with Evelyn, they started a Communication/Construction business. After many years of self employment, he went to work for New Mexico Tech until his retirement in 1998. In retirement GC and Evelyn traveled throughout New Mexico and were seasonal camp hosts for The Fort Craig National Historical Site for several years. He was a 50-year Mason, an outdoors man, he enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. He was an avid reader of Louis L’amor western novels, he was also a skilled carpenter building many homes for family and the Socorro Community.
He is survived by Joel Dean and his wife Deborah of Socorro; Joanne Kucinskas and husband Logan of Florida; Nancy Landlee and husband Nick of Alaska; Ellen Rule and husband Jerald of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. GC was preceded in death by his Wife Evelyn of 67 years, parents, Robert and Annie his brothers Robert and Delmo Dean.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to First Responders of the Socorro Fire Department, Socorro Police Department, Midway Fire Department, Socorro County Sheriff Department, the City of Socorro Utilities crew, the Socorro Electric Co-op crew, the staff at Socorro General Hospital, the many friends and neighbors who were on hand to help, for the calls and text messages, and for the flowers, plants and cards they’ve received.
A Graveside service will be held May 23, 2025 at 10:00 am at the Masonic Cemetery in Socorro where he will be placed next to his loving wife.
