George David Hawrey

George David Hawrey, age 76, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, George spent most of his life in Canarsie before retiring in 2006 and relocating to Rio Rancho, New Mexico, to be closer to his family.

George proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. After his service, he began a 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, where his dedication and hard work earned him numerous awards and accolades.

A lifelong New York Yankees fan, George enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia. He possessed a wonderful sense of humor, which he loved to showcase, often through his collection of funny custom shirts that brought smiles to many faces. 

But perhaps the most defining characteristic of George was his profound love for animals. He was a true cat lover, and his empathy for animal causes knew no bounds. George was incredibly charitable, regularly donating to numerous organizations close to his heart, including the ASPCA, and the Jane Goodall Foundation. His generosity touched countless lives, both human and animal.

George was a devoted brother to his late brother Dave and Dave’s wife, Linda, as well as to his sister Joanne and her late husband, Buddy. He was a loving and proud uncle to Diane and her husband Eric, James and his wife Christina, David and his late wife Kristy, the late Jason, and Jillian. George also shared a special bond with his many great-nieces and great-nephews, who brought him immense joy throughout his life.

George David Hawrey was as a man of compassion, especially towards the voiceless. he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Services:

• Wednesday, July 16: Viewing from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Sarah Road

• Thursday, July 17: Viewing from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a rosary at 11:00 a.m., with a graveside service to follow

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in George’s memory to the ASPCA or the Jane Goodall Foundation
