Gregory Thayer Babineaux

Gregory “Greg” T. Babineaux, 64, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.

Born on October 23, 1960, in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Thayer “Larry” and Beth Clark Babineaux, Greg’s early years were shaped by his life as a military dependent. His family’s service took him to Louisiana, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Canada, Virginia, Belgium, and ultimately New Mexico, where he put down roots.

Greg graduated from Brussels American High School in Belgium, where he played football, soccer, wrestling, and track. After high school, Greg pursued his passion for mechanics, earning an Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics from the Technical Vocational Institute (now Central New Mexico Community College). He dedicated much of his career to serving as a skilled elevator mechanic in Albuquerque.

A member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 131, Greg took pride in his trade.

Known for his warm, engaging personality and generosity, Greg touched countless lives. He was always ready to lend a hand, whether volunteering to assist physically impaired friends or serving as a caregiver to his youngest daughter, Ty. His selflessness and kindness were hallmarks of his character.

Greg faced significant challenges in recent years, but his resilience and resourcefulness carried him through.

Greg was preceded in death by his mother, Beth; his younger brother, John (Starlit); and his youngest daughter, Ty. He is survived by his father, Larry; his daughter, Janae (Andres); his brother Jim (Lisa); his granddaughter, Avery; his uncle, James “Joe” Clark (Deede); and nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever hold him in their hearts.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date on Facebook. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Tunnels to Towers, a cause close to the family’s heart.

Greg’s light will continue to shine in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
