Howard J. Lahr

Howard J. Lahr, of Rio Rancho, passed away on November 26, 2018.   He was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on November 28, 1921 and was truly a member of our “Greatest Generation.” 

 
Following graduation from Albuquerque High School, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and later worked for the telephone company in Albuquerque. In May 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Signal Corps combat field-lineman in North Africa during the 1943 Tunisian Campaign and from 1943 through May 1945 with the U.S. VI Corps in the European Theater. He participated in the Italian Campaign at Salerno, Anzio, and Rome; the invasion of southern France; and in Germany, at battles in the Ardennes and Rhineland. 


In the years following the war he became a master craftsman who owned his own hardwood flooring company and later was active in home building and home remodeling in and around Denver, Colorado.  


He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy M. Lahr and one son, Howard J. Lahr II.  Survivors include two sons, Mark Lahr of Rio Rancho and Tom Lahr of Severn, Maryland; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.   


Inturnment is in Santa Fe National Cemetery.
