Celebrating the Life of James “Jim” Johns
James “Jim” Johns of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, passed away unexpectedly on February 23, 2026.
Jim was born on February 24, 1959, in Paducah, Kentucky, to James and Ann Johns. He was the eldest of four sons. The family later moved to New Mexico, and in 1978, Jim graduated from El Dorado High School in Albuquerque.
Jim recently retired after a long and dedicated career. He worked as a communications installation supervisor before spending the last 20 years as a water treatment plant operator for Jacobs Engineering in Rio Rancho.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ann Johns, and his brother, Charles “Chuck” Johns.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Cheryll; his son, Casey, and daughter-in-law, Ana Maria; and his five cherished grandchildren, Jhonen, Andalucia, Elyse, Violet, and Elliott. He is also survived by his two brothers, Michael Johns and his wife, Kelli, of Ohio, and Joseph Johns of Kentucky; his two brothers-in-law, Mike and Tim and their families; his two sisters-in-law, Debbie and Brenda and their families; as well as many extended family members, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Jim was an avid sports fan who enthusiastically supported the Kansas City Chiefs and the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed watching educational history programs and classic John Wayne westerns. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, and had a passion for travel, horse racing, and gardening. Jim also enjoyed cooking, particularly grilling and smoking Southern-style barbecue, which he generously shared at gatherings with family and friends.
Jim will be remembered as a devoted family man and a kind, fun-loving, and good-hearted person who was always willing to lend a helping hand while fully embracing life.
He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
