Janet D. Maloney

January 3, 1933 — October 6, 2008

MALONEY, Janet D. passed away on October 6, 2008 at her home in Albuquerque. She was born on January 3, 1933 in South Carolina to J. Harvey and Doris Wilson, but spent the rest of her life in New Mexico, growing up in Santa Fe and Clovis. Janet attended Stephens College in Missouri and received her BA from the University of Denver, before moving to Albuquerque. She began work at KOB radio/TV where she met James A. Maloney who was moonlighting across the street at KGGM as a late night DJ. They were married in 1955 and spent many happy years together before this death in 1994. Although she didn't especially like the campaigning, she was the brilliance behind his successful life as a public servant. Janet was a founding member and the second president of the Assistance League of Albuquerque. For many years she was active not only in the creation and support of the ALA's Bargain Box, Assisteens, Haunted House and the Blue Portal, she also served as an officer in the National Assistance League where she assisted new Leagues across the country to obtain their charters. She also was active in the Junior League of Albuquerque for many years. Janet loved to dance, and loved all of New Mexico-camping, fishing, history, art, culture, and music. She loved her family and her friends deeply, and was generous with her time and all she had to give. Janet was a beautiful woman. She is survived by her daughters, Ann and her husband John Conway, and Sharon and her husband Robert Gilliland, and her granddaughter, Raquel Gilliland.
