(Stephens) Underwood died January 11, 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born in Cushing, Oklahoma on March 18, 1933. Jeanneen grew up in the Texas Oil Company oil camps of Eastern Oklahoma and Southeast Kansas. She graduated from New Lima High School, Oklahoma in 1951 and completed her degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1955. Jeanneen taught in Fairfax, OK and Davis, OK and married Harrison Underwood on Dec. 26, 1956. They moved to Gallup in 1957. She taught in the Gallup-McKinley County Schools for 32 years, teaching at Gallup High School, Aileen Roat Elementary and Indian Hills Elementary (24 yrs). She retired from teaching in 1992 and began a full time career as a community volunteer. Jeanneen was an organizing and charter member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gallup. She was active as a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, served as an elder and deacon at her church, volunteered at the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial for many years including the job of Exhibit Hall Co-Director, and helped start the Relay for Life in Gallup. Amongst these and many more activities, she enjoyed time with family and friends, sewing, playing the piano, working in the yard, and traveling. She will be remembered for her kindness, courage, strength, faith and graciousness. Jeanneen is survived by her husband: Harrison E. Underwood; daughter, Gloria (Tom Bischoff) of Gallup; sons, David (Lorie) of Albuquerque and Todd (Audrey Palacio) Los Chavez, NM. She is also survived by siblings Julia Stephens of Albuquerque; Jim Stephens of Owego, KS; Dick Stephens of Fredonia, KS; and Hauer Paul Stephens of Topeka, KS; two grandchildren, Clayton and Christine; five step-grandchildren, five step-great grandchildren, and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; James D. and Mabel A. Stephens; and sibling infant triplets. A Memorial Service will be held, Thursday, January 19th at 4 pm, Westminster Presbyterian Church with a reception and remembrance to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jeanneen Underwood Memorial Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1130, Gallup, NM 87305 or the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, Ups and Downs Team in care of Joyce Graves, 3708 Zia, Gallup, NM 87301.
