Jerry William Stephens, a stalwart of service and dedication, departed this life on August 29, 2024, in his beloved Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born on October 11, 1942, Jerry’s life was a tapestry woven from threads of duty, family, and a pursuit of knowledge. He leaves behind a legacy that is richly imbued with the dedication that he exhibited throughout his multifaceted career and personal passions.
From an early age, Jerry showcased an ardent spirit coupled with an unwavering commitment to his community. He proudly served in the Marine Reserves for two years, a testament to his sense of duty and commitment to his country. Following this chapter of his life, Jerry embarked on a notable career with the Albuquerque Police Department, where he dedicated over 20 years of service. His tenure was marked by significant leadership and initiative; he became the first president of the Albuquerque Police Officers Association, reflecting his desire to uplift and support his fellow officers. His pursuit of excellence took him to the revered halls of the FBI Academy and the IRS School, culminating in eleven years as the head of the Intelligence Unit, where he meticulously worked to safeguard the community he cherished so deeply.
Beyond law enforcement, Jerry’s professional journey spanned various prominent roles, including employment at the State Land Commission and the Albuquerque Journal, as well as serving as a construction superintendent. His varied experiences enriched his understanding of the world, forging a path that inspired many both within and beyond the precincts of law enforcement.
Education was a pillar in Jerry’s life; he completed his high school education at St. Pius X, graduating in 1960, and further pursued his studies at the University of Albuquerque, focusing on Police Science and Accounting. This foundation not only equipped him with the necessary skills for his career but also reflected his commitment to lifelong learning.
Jerry was a man of many interests. In his earlier years, he found joy in the freedom of motorcycles, exhilarated by the open road. Throughout his life, woodworking became a cherished pursuit, allowing him to channel his creativity and craftsmanship into tangible expressions of art and function.
Above all, Jerry was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 1/2 years, Donna Stephens of Rio Rancho, NM. Together, they built a life filled with love and family, nurturing their children—daughter Jerilynn (Martin) Huebschman of Austin, TX, and son Anthony (Melissa) Stephens of Rio Rancho, NM. Their bond flourished further in the blessed presence of grandchildren Mikey (Hannah) Stephens, Makayla Stephens (Iggy Marquez), and Jessica, Zachary, and Megan Huebschman, alongside his great-grandchild, Zyla C. Marquez. Each of them carries a piece of Jerry’s spirit forward, eternally cherished and loved.
As we bid farewell to Jerry William Stephens, we celebrate a life richly lived. His unwavering commitment to service, his profound love for family, and his unquenchable thirst for knowledge will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him. May his memory be a source of inspiration, guiding us as we strive to embody the virtues he so embodied throughout his remarkable life.
