Jim Chaves Schafer

Jim Chaves Schafer was born on December 10, 1937 in East Orange, New Jersey to Manuel J. Schafer and Dolores Chaves Schafer. He passed away February 28, 2011, He was 73. He graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1955. He served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany, earning an Honorable Discharge in 1961. He married the love of his life, Priscilla on November 11, 1961. He and his family moved to Albuquerque in 1970. He retired from the United States Geological Service in 1992. He was a devoted member of the Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, serving as an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Communion. He had won several ribbons from the New Mexico State Fair for his wood carvings, and weaving. He grew prize winning roses and was a member of the Albuquerque Rose Society, but he will best be remembered as a humorous, loving family man. He will be missed. Mr. Schafer is survived by his wife Priscilla Trujillo Schafer of the family home. Three children: Michael J. Schafer and his wife Maureen of Albuquerque, Father Patrick D. Schafer, OFM of Gallup, and Dolores S. Thompson and her husband David T. of Oregon. One Grandson: Thomas M. Schafer also survives him. He was preceded in death by his parents: Manuel and Dolores Schafer. A Rosary will be led by Deacon Pilar and Viola Garcia on Monday March 7, 2011 at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday March 8, 2011 at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church at 2:00 PM. Interment of the cremated remains will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date. Honorary Pallbearers include: Pat Trujillo, Tom Trujillo, Ted Martinez, Eloy Gonzales, Mel Archuleta, and Brandon Zamora.
