John Patrick O’Neill passed away peacefully at his home on May 30, 2026, at the age of 94, and went to be home with the Lord.
Born on April 27, 1932, in Clovis, New Mexico, John lived a life defined by faith in God, devotion to family, service to his country, intellectual curiosity, and an enduring sense of humor.
He graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic school in Clovis and proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. Following his military service, John earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1959 and spent most of his career working at Kirtland Air Force Base.
John met the love of his life, Nancy Bagby O’Neill, in October 1959. Together they shared 66 loving years of marriage in Albuquerque, New Mexico, building a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. They raised six children and delighted in the lives of their three grandchildren.
Whether wearing his signature bucket hat on the tennis court, working through a Sudoku puzzle, enjoying a Gonzaga basketball game, taking his oldest grandson to golf tournaments, discussing his time working on the Santa Fe Railroad with his youngest grandson, boating and fishing with family, or keeping up with the latest news and technology, John approached life with curiosity and enthusiasm. His sharp mind, steady presence, and enthusiasm for learning inspired all who knew him.
He was a beloved husband, father, Grandpa/Sodapop/Grandpop, brother, and friend whose kindness, integrity, and humor will be deeply missed. John is survived by his wife, Nancy; his five children, Cathy Baum (John Baum), Janice O’Neill Lomnicky (Todd Lomnicky), John M. O’Neill, Angela O’Neill, and David O’Neill; his three grandchildren, Matthew Baum, Mandy Kamphoefner (Seth Kamphoefner), and Brian Flores; his siblings, Joseph O’Neill and Thomas O’Neill; and many extended family members and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
He is preceded in death by his son Patrick O’Neill; his parents, Maurice James O’Neill and Irma O’Neill; and his siblings, Barbara Miller and Jim O’Neill.
John’s legacy of faith and family lives on in his family he cherished, the values he instilled, and the countless memories shared by those fortunate enough to know and love him.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Daniel family (Charles Daniel, Rev. John Daniel, and Paula Daniel and other Daniel family members) for their prayers, support, and friendship.
