John Oscar Shepardson

March 8, 1944 — September 11, 2014

Shepardson, John  Oscar

John O. Shepardson, of Socorro, New Mexico, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2014. He was 70 years old and resting at home when he finally succumbed to an extended illness. John was born on March 8, 1944 in Attleboro, Massachusetts to parents Marshall and Verna Shepardson, both deceased.  His older brother Steve, and younger brothers Bob and Richard, still reside in the North-East. John was fortunate to celebrate the 45th anniversary of his marriage to his wife Vivian on August 22, 2014. John is also survived by his two daughters and 4 grandchildren. His older daughter, Kathy, lives in West Virginia with her husband Sean and their three children, Maddie (15), Meg (12), and Cormac (7). His younger daughter, Emily, lives in Socorro, near her parents, with her husband Rey and their son Joshua (4). John graduated from King Phillip High School and went on to start his studies in electrical engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology.  His studies laid the foundation for his success in the United States Navy which he joined in 1964.  John’s 20 years in the Navy lived up to the recruiting promise of “Join the Navy and See the World.” He was stationed everywhere from Adak, Alaska and Hanza, Okinawa to Bremerhaven, Germany and Winter Harbor, Maine.  His favorite station assignment was in Pearl Harbor, not just because of the weather and beaches, but because of the nature of his work. He got to work on important projects and even went out on a mission that received special recognition.  John transferred from active duty in the Navy in 1984 and was transferred to the fleet reserve for 10 years before he was fully retired. John will be remembered by his friends and family for many things including his biting sarcasm, his love of music, and his hearty laughter.  He loved to cook from an early age.  When it came time for family celebrations and holidays, he could be found in the kitchen, tending to the turkey, or stirring the big pots of chili his friends and family loved.  John’s final arrangements are being handled by Daniels Family Funeral Services in Socorro.  John preferred not to have a funeral service.  Instead, he would want friends to remember him by having a drink with a friend, sharing a funny story, and tipping their bartender or server generously.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SGH Home Care and Hospice, who were so helpful to him and to his wife at the end of his life.
