John Oliver Sonny"" Stock, Jr.

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, John Oliver “Sonny” Stock, Jr., age 78, passed away at his home on Thursday, December 30, 2010 from causes incident to age. He lived life to the fullest, overcoming many trials through his courage, wit and personal fortitude. He accomplished much through hard work and his untiring energy. Oliver was born in Jewett Valley, New Mexico, now known as Waterflow, to John Oliver Stock, Sr. and Minnie Evans Stock on January 26, 1932. He spent his childhood years in Waterflow and attended Kirtland Central High School. He married Garda Iris Walker on June 3, 1952, for time and all eternity, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Oliver served his country in the Army during the Korean War. Upon returning from the war, he and Garda made Jewett Valley their home to raise their family. Oliver earned a living farming. He worked tirelessly and with great zeal to support and provide for his family. He was a wonderful and devoted patriarch to his family. He cherished and was tremendously proud of every member of his family. He created traditions, memories and legacies that will be carried on for generations. It meant everything to him for his family to be happy. Oliver was respected by all who knew him. His was a life well-lived and he was a man well-loved. Oliver was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and took joy in being active and in serving in many callings through the years. His favorite calling was working with the youth. He loved going to the temple. Beyond his church callings, he used the many skills he developed throughout his life to help others around him in any way he could. Oliver leaves behind a wonderful example of service and a legacy of love to his posterity. He is survived by his eternal companion, Garda; five daughters, Cheryl (Jeff) Hunt, Lisa (Shawn) Freebairn, Candy (Brad) Ashcroft, Wendy and Kristy; three sons, John (Francine), Tracy (Cyndy) and Ed (Marilyn); 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine Ellingford and Donna; and brother, Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Oliver, Sr. and Minnie; sister, Daris Cattaneo; brother, Evans; and grandchild, Sarah Crandall. Pallbearers are Jacob Hunt, Brandon Hunt, Spencer Hunt, Joseph Stock, Joshua Freebairn and Logan Ashcroft. Honorary pallbearers are Elder Caleb Ashcroft , SGT Aaron Crandall, Treven Wethington, Lance Roundy, William Kermode and Dog. Oliver’s family would like to thank Melissa, Pat, Susie and all the staff of Basin Hospice Care for their kind, devoted and sensitive care. They are among the unsung heroes whose assistance contributes to the goodness of humankind. Services will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Kirtland Stake Center, 10 Road 6523, Kirtland, New Mexico. Family and friends may call Monday evening, January 3 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 East Ute Street, Farmington, New Mexico. An additional family viewing will be held Monday morning from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the church, prior to services. Interment will be in the Kirtland Cemetery with military rites by the VFW Hugh K.
