John Walter Zscheile

September 26, 1911 — April 22, 2010

John Walter Zscheile September 26, 1911 " April 22-2010 Walter Zscheile was born September 26, 1911 in Burlington, Kansas to Adele and Oscar Zscheile. He married the love of his life, Gertrude Brookens on June 20, 1936. Walter and Gertrude lived in Burlington for most of their lives, but spent the last years of their life together in New Mexico and Arizona, places that they both loved. He was an avid and shrewd card player who spent many afternoons and evenings at the bridge table. They were married for almost 60 years when Gertrude passed. He resided in Farmington, New Mexico for the last three years of his life. He served in World War II, U.S. Navy, as a Radar man on the USS Jesse Owens. Walter was preceded in death by his wife , Gertrude, in 1996 and son, John Zscheile, two grandchildren, Brian Zscheile and Adele Turner. He is survived by his three daughters, Barbara Null, Ann Zscheile and Wendy (Jim) Carpenter, nine grand children, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He lived his life as an honest and kind man. Walt is loved by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a kind soul who always put the needs of others before his own. He never wanted to be the center of attention. Rather, he enjoyed celebrating the lives of the people around him. He enjoyed the company of others whether it was playing cards, enjoying an order of “crisp” hash browns, or basking in the sun on a warm afternoon. There will be a private celebration of his life in Burlington, Kansas this June. The family would like to thank SJRMC surgical/ICU for all of the kindnesses and support they showed during this time. We would especially like to thank Dr. Patrick Martin for his gentle, caring spirit. Those wishing to send condolences may do so at www.danielsfuneral.com.
