Johnny Mounyo

Johnny Mounyo passed away peacefully at his home on March 2, 2019.  He was born October 2, 1933 in Magdalena, NM to Jean and Marianne Mounyo.  His childhood was spent on the family farm in Polvadera, NM.  He graduated from Socorro High School in 1951.  After serving 4 years in the United States Navy, he returned to Datil, NM where he worked beside his best friend and cousin Michel Harriet Jr. He met his future wife at a dance at the Navajo Lodge and later celebrated a double wedding along with Michel and Sue Harriet. Johnny was famous for his stories and jokes.  There was always plenty of laughter when he was around, and a cigar or some Vitamin W might be involved. He especially enjoyed spending time working cattle with his family and friends at his ranch.  The family is especially appreciative of his right hand, Manuel Rivera over the last 12 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Thomas Mounyo; sisters, Nolene Fanning, and Josie (Ted) Harris; sons Leon (Vicky) Mounyo, Johnny Ray (Shannon) Mounyo, Gene (Teresa) Mounyo; grandchildren, Leon John Mounyo, Kelsi (Kory) Bramwell, Cole (Bonnie) Mounyo, Kilee Mounyo, and Braden Mounyo; great grandchildren Raely and Ryle Mounyo. A rosary will be recited Tuesday, March 5, at 8:30a.m. at San Miguel Church in Socorro, NM, followed by a Communion Service at 9:00a.m.  Burial will be at the Green’s Gap Cemetery in Datil, NM followed by a reception at the Datil School Gym where a meal will be provided. Pallbearers are Beau Bruton, Brett Bruton, Tony Crespin, Mike Harriet, Randy Porter, and Louis Sanders.  Honorary Pallbearers are Shawn Cain, Rufus Choate, Jim Farmer, Ted Harris, Pete Lucero, and Manuel Rivera.
