Jose Dan Velasquez A lifelong resident of Ignacio, CO passed away April 3rd in Aztec, NM, after a short illness, he was 91. Mr. Velasquez was born January 17th, 1919 to Jose and Maria Velasquez in the family home. It was at an early age when he discovered his love for horses. His love for them aided in his other passions of hunting and fishing. He spent countless hours in the saddle where he tried his luck at roping and other events, and going on numerous pack trips with his family and friends. After graduating from Ignacio High school he worked with the family businesses before joining the United States Navy where he served from 1941 - 1945 during WWII. He told many stories about the places he had been. After serving his country he returned home and began working for the La Plata Country Road and Bridge Department where he retired after 38 years as a committed employee. Shortly after returning home from the service Dan married Della Alries on April 23, 1951 in Ignacio, CO. They started their family shortly after. Dan and Della instilled in their children the importance of family and friends and that they were one in the same. His daughter recalls all the tail gate picnics, camping and fishing trips, and other countless outings in the surrounding Mountains. Dan also served the community in a number of civic and volunteer ways. His name was added to the appreciation marker at the Nighthorse Park. He was also recognized by the Western Heritage days. Dan was preceded in death by his wife Della of 45 years, a brother Tony Velasquez, a sister Cecilia Livingston, and an infant granddaughter Teresa. He is survived by his children Tony and Robin Velasquez of Layton, UT, Mike and Crystal Velasquez of Spring Creek, Joe and Carolyn Velasquez of Farmington, NM, Vida and Randy Brown of Bloomfield, NM, Jim and Paula Velasquez of Lupton, MI and Santa Fe, NM, Cecilia Robbins of Ignacio, CO, and Arnold Velasquez also of Oxford, and 21 Grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
