MESSERSMITH- Lanny Messersmith, 67, passed away Monday, April 5th surrounded by his family. He was born in 1942 in Laverne, Oklahoma, to Harry and Vivian Messersmith. Lanny attended Sandia High School in Albuquerque, attained a BA in English from UNM, followed by his juris doctor degree in 1969 from UNM Law School. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple and of Temple 6 Masonic Lodge. He served as Assistant District Attorney and Assistant US Attorney for the state of New Mexico, and began his private practice in 1974. In 1984, he was appointed the Honorary Consul for the Federal Republic of Germany, a position he proudly held until his death. Lanny is survived by his wife of 35 years, Christine; son Nicholas (and fiancé Amber Smith) of Denver, Colorado and sister Vicky Shields of Key West, Florida. No local service is planned. Later this year, the family will sail one last time with Lanny aboard his beloved sail boat Jolly Mon and put him to rest in the San Diego Bay.
