Laura Joan Frey

May 17, 1958 — May 1, 2025

Our beloved, Laura J. Frey, 16 days prior to her 67 birthday, passed away at home on May 1, 2025; surrounded by her family and her close friends: a family by birth and choice. Laura was born on Sidi Slimane Air Base, Morocco to fantastic parents Janice and Eugene Frey. Laura lived on four continents and in seven states.

Laura earned a Bachelor’s Degree from NMSU and pursued a long career in Banking and Finance, retiring as Vice President of Institutional Funding at the Bank of Oklahoma in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She was best known for her humor, generosity, and storytelling. Always quick with a quip, she knew how to share a story which often began with, “Stop me if you’ve heard this before…”

While she wasn’t known to swear, she did call people ‘pips’, and sometimes with a capital “P”. And, you knew you were loved when she called you a “Doodle!”

Laura’s free time was dedicated to serving many people and organizations through her love of cooking and baking, as well as her deep interest in numbers, banking, and finance. During her time in Oklahoma and New Mexico, she provided countless cheeseballs, desserts, and lasagnas for parties, gatherings, and friends in need. When presented with a problem, she always said “Numbers are our friends,” and “there is nothing more exciting than a spreadsheet.” While her professional life was banking, she also volunteered her services to friends and family in all manner of financial matters!

Laura served her ancestral family church (St Paul’s United Methodist Church) as a bookkeeper, payroll manager, and financial advisor. In addition, Laura volunteered to serve as the Treasurer for Casa Rosa Food Pantry in Placitas, NM. During her time in Oklahoma, she volunteered with Gold Star Moms to provide care packages to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. And served as a Docent at the Tulsa Zoo.

Laura loved having animals in her life. She was a proud and doting parent to Monroe, Captain Jackson, Millie, Toby, and Andrew who she fostered after his being rescued from the Hermit’s Peak Mountain Fire.

Laura is survived by Mark (brother) and Nancy Frey; John (brother) and Katherine Aeby; Ben (nephew) and Tracy Frey; Hannah (niece) and John Hsieh. She is also survived by many cousins; local friends Paula Etheridge, Amber Trujillo, Cynthia Aeby; and a full host of friends across many states with many friendships spanning over 45 years! In addition, there are numerous colleagues and acquaintances worldwide who she touched with her kindness, helpfulness, and enduring warmth and humor. She is preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Janice Frey, cousins Kris Mulheim and Kay Rupert, and her dearest friend, DeAnn Raines.

Laura loved God, Country, Family, and Friends always!

Her service is scheduled on Friday, May 16 at 10 am at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Constitution Blvd. in Albuquerque, NM, with a brunch provided by the men’s group. Laura always LOVED a good brunch! Laura’s service may also be viewed on youtube.com; search for “SPUMCABQ.”

In lieu of flowers, please consider a monetary donation in Laura’s name to one of her favorite service organizations: St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, NM Dog, or Casa Rosa Food Pantry, Placitas, NM.
