Leon Samuel Hatcher (Hatch)

November 11, 1919 — January 21, 2009

Leon Samuel Hatcher (Hatch) was born November 11, 1919, in Gainsville, TX, to Arthur and Eula Mae Hatcher and passed away January 21, 2009. He lived the last 38 years of his life in Farmington where he retired after a long career with the US Bureau of Reclamation that covered four states. He was a surveyor who rose to be Chief of Survey for a number of extensive dam and aqueduct projects including associated roads and recreation areas. He was a dedicated public servant who took great pride in his work. He and his wife Lucille called Sacred Heart Catholic Church their spiritual home. He is survived by Lucille and by seven living children, Elaine Fransen and husband Doug, Carol Walters, Sam Hatcher and wife Katherine, Izzy Bracken and husband Doug, Steve Hatcher and wife Jean, Ginny Rivera and husband Bob, and Chris Neher and husband Ron. Brothers and sisters include Paula Lamm, and Kent, Donnie and James Hatcher. He was preceded in death by his daughter Hilma Montoya and husband Andy. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren He was dearly loved by all his family and all his children were privileged to be with him before he passed away. He will be sorely missed but the lessons he taught and the love he gave us will never be forgotten. Donations in lieu of flowers are requested to the San Juan County Meals on Wheels program.
