Rio Rancho

Lloyd “Sarge" Louis Downey, cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died November 16, 2022, after a long and bravely fought battle.

He was born August 23, 1942, in Philadelphia, where he lived until his father's Naval career took him to countless cities throughout his childhood. The family was transferred to Pearl Harbor in 1952 and relocated to Honolulu, where Lloyd completed middle and high school, graduating from St. Louis High School in 1960.

The year 1961 was a momentous one for Lloyd. In that year he both joined the United States Marine Corps and met the love and joy of his life, his bride Linda. During his time in the Marines he served valiantly across the globe, from Camp Pendleton to Cuba, in Okinawa, the Philippines and Vietnam.

In 1965, Lloyd and Linda began their 57-year, love-filled marriage in Long Beach, California. The following year he joined GTE Corporation (later Verizon), where he enjoyed a 33-year career. His son David was born in 1968, and daughter Staci followed in 1969. During Lloyd's years in California, he earned marketing and merchandising degrees from Cerritos College. He also coached Little League, Pony, and Colt baseball and Pop Warner football, and volunteered as both a youth baseball umpire and soccer referee.

After a number of years spent in Texas, Lloyd and Linda retired to Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Unsuited to a quiet retirement, Lloyd served four seasons as an usher for the Albuquerque Isotopes, a job he loved and for which he was ideal.

Above all things, Lloyd adored and was devoted to his family. Before his passing, he shared how blessed he felt to have and be loved by that family. He was grateful for a good life, and hoped to be remembered as “just a nice guy" and for the good things he had done in his lifetime. He will be of course, as he was respected, admired, and loved beyond measure.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Dorothy (Mendoza-Walker) Downey, and his parents-in-law, William and Edith (Stamps) Kreps. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda, son David and daughter-in-law Kim, daughter Staci, and grandsons Gregory, Christopher, and David Downey. His family, together with innumerable friends and neighbors, will forever miss his silly sense of humor, generosity of spirit, and joyful presence.
