Born in the community of Cleveland, New Mexico, Magdalena “Maggie” Maestas learned self-reliance at an early age. She worked on the family farm and later at the campus of Menaul School in Albuquerque until she earned her diploma. Menaul School gave Maggie a spiritual foundation and community that she valued throughout her lifetime. She also understood her parents’ sacrifices that made studying at Menaul School possible. Perhaps in response to her parents’ great sacrifices, Maggie was motivated throughout her life to make other people’s struggles and lives a little easier. She was quick to provide food, housing, and kindness to anyone who struggled. She encouraged her children in their educational pursuits to unlock their potential and improve themselves. She taught them honesty and integrity.
Family was important to Maggie, and she had a special relationship with her sister Sarah. They were nearly inseparable all their lives. We have fond recollections of their shared holiday meals, vacations, and childhood stories. They were each other’s closest friends. Another special relationship was with her granddaughter, Rayn. Rayn and Maggie spent most weekends together over several years. Rayn appreciates how her grandmother cared for her when she was sick and taught her cooking and other life skills. Maggie loved spoiling her granddaughter, whether it was through trips to the museum or shopping.
Maggie, a petite and normally cautious person, sometimes surprised her family: The kids remember their mom spontaneously hopping onto the family’s pony without a saddle or harness, riding in a hot air balloon during her senior years, and being nonchalant about a trip to New York City during a hurricane.
Lately, she had a fondness for sweet treats. Much to the surprise of her children, she competed in a pie eating contest. She was never a fast eater nor in serious contention to win, but she tried and had a good story to tell afterward. She could only be described as sweet herself.
She had boundless energy, curiosity, and she was interested in learning about the people she met. She formed friendships with her neighbors who were wonderful to her and helped her feel independent even as her abilities changed.
Maggie was inquisitive, resourceful, independent, and alert. She led by example how to be gentle and good. Her presence will be keenly missed. She will forever stay very near and dear to her family’s hearts.
