Margaret Vollendorf

January 24, 1925 — March 28, 2015

Vollendorf, Margaret L.

Margaret “Jackie” Vollendorf passed away at her home in Albuquerque on March 28, 2015, with her children at her side. She was born on January 24, 1925 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. After the births of her two older sisters, her dad was certain that she was going to be a boy and chose the name “Jack”. She turned out to be a girl, but was always known as Jackie.
She is survived and will be dearly missed by her children, Nick Vollendorf (Susan Kelley) of New Berlin, WI and Jean Porter of Albuquerque; her brother, Jerry Lucia (Sandy) of Austin, TX; her grandchildren, Khira Hahnel (Frank) of Orlando, FL, Fran Kelley and Eileen Kelley (Joe Rasmussen) of Madison, WI; great-grandchildren, Chloe and Max Williams of Orlando, FL and numerous nieces and nephews. Jackie was an incredibly supportive and caring mother who truly adored her children.  She was the greatest mother-in-law imaginable.
Jackie was predeceased by her sisters, Elizabeth (“Lu”) Bylander of Eau Claire, WI and Ida Mae (“Lou”) Mayes of Albuquerque, but is survived by her cherished P.E.O sisters.
Jackie was a kind and generous person with a twinkle in her eye. Along with her sweet disposition, she had a brilliant mind, especially for math. She loved teaching and helping others. She held a Master’s Degree in mathematics from the University of Minnesota and taught for many years. When her family relocated to Tonopah, Nevada, she rode horses, raised her children and tore up the floor square dancing.  After moving to Albuquerque, she worked for over 25 years at Rio Grande Jewelers and put her math skills to use as a tax preparer at H&R Block. Jackie had many diverse interests. She played bridge and enjoyed watching tennis and golf on television. She also was a wonderful cook, and for many years hosted her friends for a delicious breakfast for the Wimbledon Tennis finals. She was immensely proud of her adopted City and State, and loved to show visitors the splendid scenery of Albuquerque and beyond. She especially enjoyed spending time in Elena Gallegos Park.
She was a 53-year member of the P.E.O. and developed life-long friends and wonderful shared experiences. The family is eternally grateful to her P.E.O. sisters for their daily love and support, especially for hosting her 90th birthday party and calling and visiting Jackie when she was home-bound.
A celebration of Jackie’s life is planned for a later date. Memorials may be made in Jackie’s honor to the P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education, P.O. Box 20194, Albuquerque, NM 87154. To share memories with the family please visit Jackie's memorial webpage at www.danielsfuneral.com.
