Marian F. Sotel passed away peacefully at home on May 29, 2025, at the age of 95.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Marian was raised in New Mexico and spent most of her childhood with her family in Jemez Springs—a place she held dear throughout her life. She took great pride in her family’s long history in the area and loved sharing stories of their lives there.
Marian attended St. Vincent’s Academy in Albuquerque, where she spoke fondly of the nuns who taught her. She credited them with instilling in her a lifelong respect for discipline, education and above all—manners. These values became a guiding force throughout her life.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts from St. Louis University and began a distinguished career with the Atomic Energy Commission, later the Department of Energy, ultimately retiring as department director. Her intelligence, professionalism and strong moral compass earned her deep respect among her colleagues and peers.
Marian was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Sotel. She is survived by her sister, Connie Ryan (nee Sotel), her nephews, Greg Ryan and David Ryan and her niece, Sharon Ryan (Joseph Heining). She also leaves behind a community of friends and loved ones who admired her warmth and wit.
Marian traveled extensively throughout her life, with her most cherished experiences being her journeys to Africa. A lover of all animals, she generously supported many animal welfare organizations. She also served as a docent at the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo for twenty years, joyfully sharing her in-depth knowledge with visitors young and old.
Casa Angelica was an organization dear to her heart. Marian served on fundraising committees for many years and served one term as president. She was also a talented artist and a tremendous gardener known for her beautiful yard.
