Obituary

Maria Dolores “Dee” Lucero, 79, of Rio Rancho, entered peacefully into eternal rest on February 20, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and strengthened by the Holy Rites of the Catholic Church. With faith as her lifelong compass, she was called home to the Lord whom she served so faithfully.

Born on June 18, 1946, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Damaso M. Armijo and Lola Armijo, Dee was a devoted and lifelong Catholic. Her faith was not simply something she practiced — it was the very foundation upon which she built her life. A faithful member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, she generously gave of her time and heart in service to her parish community for many years. Whether in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, attending daily Mass, or offering quiet acts of charity, Dee lived her faith with humility and joy.

Her deep love for Our Blessed Mother was evident in her daily rosary, and she found comfort in praying to Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Anthony. Each morning began with prayer — what she lovingly called “coffee with Jesus” — entrusting her family and all her intentions to Divine Providence.

Dee created a home firmly rooted in faith, hope, and love. As a mother, she taught her children to trust God completely, especially in times of trial. Her greatest vocation was her family, and the titles she cherished most were “Mama” and “Nana.” Her love was steadfast, protective, and unconditional — a reflection of Christ’s love she sought to imitate.

She is survived by her son, LeeRoy Lucero and daughter-in-law, Eliza; her daughter, Leah Rice and son-in-law, Garrett; her granddaughters, Martina Stephens and husband Sam, and Katrina Gutierrez and husband Desmond; her grandson, Brock Rice; her great-granddaughters, Eva and Valerie Stephens; and her great-grandson, Ezra Gutierrez. She was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews and was blessed with a wide circle of extended family and dear friends, including a special loved one, Desiree Marquez, who held a cherished place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved sister, Emily June Gutierrez; and her brother-in-law, Fernando Gutierrez.

A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 1502 Sara Rd, Rio Rancho, NM 87124, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Monsignor Raun and Father Scott McKee.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23)
