Voller, Mary Emily Hannett (Sissy) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2014. She was born on September 14, 1927 in Gallup, NM to Dr. James W. and Claire Marie McMullen Hannett. Her father, Dr. Hannett, moved from upstate New York to Gallup in the 1910s to pursue his medical career. Dr. and Mrs. Hannett moved to Albuquerque in 1929 when Dr. Hannett became chief surgeon and chief of staff at Presbyterian Hospital. Sissy was raised in the family home, and attended Sandia Girls School (later Sandia Preparatory School). She graduated from Albuquerque High School and the University of New Mexico where she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority member. Upon her graduation in 1947, Sissy began her teaching career. She taught elementary school, grades one through six in a single classroom in Roswell, New Mexico. She continued her teaching career at Old Town Elementary School in Albuquerque before embarking on her new career as a mother. Once her children were of school age, she resumed teaching as a substitute. A career in retail followed her teaching years. In later years, Sissy taught English as a second language (ESL) for Sombra Del Monte Elementary School. She also enjoyed volunteering for Catholic Charities as an ESL instructor and helped many students take and pass the US Citizenship Exam. Sissy was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed creating clothing, tote bags and baby gifts for her friends and family. She was an avid Lobo sports fan (mens and womens teams) and enjoyed listening to the games on the radio. Though her family often complained about picture taking, we will all cherish the many Happy Times photo albums she lovingly prepared. Sissy was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. James Wallace Hannett and Claire Marie Hannett; her siblings, Jane Hannett Rice, Betty Marie Hannett, Patricia Hannett Hueter and Arthur "A.T." Hannett. She is survived by her children, John H. Voller of Albuquerque, NM and Marie Alderete and husband, Thomas, of Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren, Denise Voller, Lisa Voller, Chris Voller, Anthony Alderete; nieces, Ann Hueter Cape, Laura Hueter Bass, Jane Hueter-Moody, Janet and Emily Rice and special friend, Gail Anastasio. The family would like to thank Presbyterian Hospice and the staff at the assisted living facility, Casa Tercer Cielo for the loving care given to Sissy. A private family gathering celebrating Sissys life has taken place. If desired, please make memorial contributions to the charity of your choice.
