Mary Zengerle

October 17, 1924 — January 1, 2019

Zengerle, Mary Gallegos
Age 94, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in Socorro, NM. She was born in Socorro, NM on October 17, 1924, to Juan Jose and Marillita (Lopez) Gallegos.  Mary graduated from Socorro High School and moved to Los Angeles, CA after graduating and met her soon to be husband Christopher M. Chavez who had moved from Los Chavez, NM. Mary worked at Grand Central Market in  Los Angeles and was a great story teller and loved sharing stories with the family about all the movie stars she met there. She was very active in sports and was an avid bowler. She and Chris enjoyed a good life and always cared for their parents and sent money back to their parents as they were both raised to respect and appreciate the value of their families. This was an attribute of Mary's that she instilled in her daughters and grandchildren; enriching their lives and teaching them by example unconditional love for family. Eventually Mary returned to Socorro and married Jacob Zengerle. She then went to work for the City of Socorro for many years under 3 administrations. She was a people person and enjoyed working with others. She loved interacting with the community. Mary was always interested  in politics which was a trait she learned and inherited from her father. She enjoyed representing those in need and used her voice to assure equality and fairness for all. Mary loved life; was funny, warm, overly generous, and a great source of strength and encouragement for her family. She challenged each family member to be the best they could be; to delve outside their comfort zone to accomplish more then the generation before. Her compassion, strength, and positive attitude greatly enriched the lives of her family. She will be dearly missed by her family and her friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Christopher M. Chavez; her second husband, Jacob Zengerle; her brother, Desiderio Gallegos; sisters, Marianne Silva, Pauline Lopez, Flora Elmond; son-in-law, George Duffy Scarborough; and grandson, Christopher Hendrix Scarborough.  Mary is survived by her loving daughters, Barbara C.
