Obituary

  • Maurice Armijo, a beloved member of our community and a man whose life was marked by service and love, peacefully entered
  • eternal life on Saturday, August 8th, 2026, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, surrounded by loved ones, following a recent
  • cerebrovascular event.

  • Born on September 21st, 1936, in Belen, New Mexico, Maurice was the son of Sesario Armijo and Ramona Baca, both of whom preceded him in death, along with seven of his ten siblings.

  • He spent his youth in New Mexico, attending Albuquerque High School before beginning a naval career on March 4th, 1956. Stationed with the Long Beach Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet, Maurice spent two adventurous years aboard the USS Lexington, an Essex-class aircraft carrier from World War II, touring the globe and forging lifelong memories. He often reminisced about his deployment to the Western Pacific in April 1957, arriving in Yokosuka, Japan, on June 1st, where he witnessed Cold War jet operations featuring aircraft like the FJ-3M Fury and F3HDemon. A skilled welder and flame cutter, Maurice completed courses in Elementary Welding and earned the rank of Master-at-Arms Second Class, Non-Commissioned Petty Officer. His dedicated service earned him the Good Conduct Medal, First Award, ending March 3rd, 1958, and he fulfilled his reserve obligation in1963. Maurice’s career began anew the day after the birth of his first child in October 1959, at ACF Industries in Albuquerque, a vital manufacturing plant for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission that produced components for the nation’s nuclear arsenal.
  • When the plant transitioned to General Electric Aircraft Engine Business Group in the late 1960s, Maurice rose from Machinist and International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers Local 794 member to managerial and engineering roles, exemplifying dedication and perseverance. The family briefly moved out of New Mexico to the Greater Cincinnati area because of Maurice’s engineering promotion. They returned from the Midwest in 1975, and Maurice retired from GE in 1990, leaving behind a thirty-one-year legacy of hard work and integrity.

  • Maurice met Nina Maldonado at Albuquerque High in the mid-1950s, and they fell in love; they were married on May 31st, 1958, at Albuquerque’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They shared sixty-five wonder-filled years of true love and commitment to each other, their family, and community.

  • Maurice’s Catholic faith was a cornerstone of his life, evident in his active participation at the Church of the Risen Savior and the Pope John XXIII Catholic Communities, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose among those who knew him. His primary life purpose was to provide, and he did so very well. He was an attentive Grampy and a loving Father. His friends, family, and community benefited from his genuine, suave, stylish, and caring nature. His sense of humor was the best until the very end. Maurice truly enjoyed sharing laughter. In addition to loving the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and traveling to Rome to visit Vatican City, as well as cruising the Caribbean, he was an avid golfer, card shark, bowler, and coin collector. He was also pretty handy with a Moe-Fix for just about anything! His journey reflects a life of service, resilience, and unwavering commitment, forever etched in the hearts of those he loved.

  • Maurice is survived by his four children, Maurice Dominick Armijo (John Knox) of Santa Fe, NM; David James (Juli Armijo) of Albuquerque, NM; Daniel Gregory (Wendy Armijo) of Maricopa, Arizona; and Denise (Chris Blewett) of Albuquerque, NM.
